Crushable Wines For Crushable People

Valentines Day is the perfect time to pick up a wine that is eminently drinkable - preferably with a bunch of friends. We at Pairings can help you select just the right one, as you well know, but what do you ask for? Something crushable? Something quaffable? Well, it turns out that the French have had a word for this kind of wine for a very, very long time: Glou-Glou.

So WTF (What The Fermentation) is Glou-Glou, exactly? Glou-Glou translates from French to English as "Glug-Glug," the sound that liquid makes as it's being poured out of a bottle - or possibly down your gullet. And regardless of the fact that it sounds cutesy and kind of like something you'd say to an infant, it's an important term in wine circles. It's used to differentiate fresh, light, juicy wines from the dark, brooding ones with big tannin structure.

It's also more of a category of wine rather than a style, so you're probably not going to see the term on a wine bottle label (though there are exceptions). It can also be red, white, pink, or orange. So what kinds of wine qualify as Glou-Glou?

  • Lighter bodied wines.

  • Fresh or young wines.

  • Wines that are juicy or fruit-forward, with satisfying acidity.

  • Wines that are meant to be drunk right now, rather than cellared.
